Creating our penguins and learning new new vocabulary words.

Penguin Experiment

We ended our penguin week with a science experiment! How does a penguin stay dry and warm while swimming in the ice cold water? First we started with making sure that our water was ICE COLD. After checking that we put on 2 cotton gloves. Over 1 of the gloves we put a rubber glove on top of it. This was penguin with oil on it's feathers. The cotton glove by itself was the penguin's blubber and feathers. We decided that our hands were nice and warm with each of the gloves on. Now to try the test with water! We placed both of them in and BRRR! The cotton glove by itself was getting all wet! But the rubber glove over top the cotton glove kept it nice and dry! We thought it was pretty neat to act like a penguin for a couple of minutes!

The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive

Greetings,

Staff and students at West Elementary School have made the choice to give back to the hospitals that have touched our communities. We felt that we could do this by supplying the hospitals with pajamas and books for the children that are ill. It is our hope to make a better bedtime for children in need while teaching our students the value of giving and helping others.

The winter season is a particularly critical time when these children are most vulnerable to serious colds and illnesses. Warm clean pajamas help to protect them against night chills and harmful conditions. Emotionally, pajamas are a hug for children who are ill, feel lost or alone.

We will be participating in this service project from January 16th -Febuary 11th to collect brand new pajamas. All children’s sizes are needed from newborn on up as well as books to go along with each set. Pajamas for all seasons are needed, but especially for the winter months. (New complete sets or nightgowns only). We will be distributing our books and pajamas to PACH & Mercy Medical Center in Mason City for children that are experiencing a long stay in the hospital. We plan to have everything delivered by Valentine’s Day. Please have a heart and send donations to school with your child.

Your pajama collections are such a loving way for you to show kindness to others who really need our help. Your books and pajamas will give them some comfort and make them feel good. You are also welcome to order books from Scholastic book orders. Please let your teacher know if they are for our service project when placing your order.

Sweet dreams, West Elementary Staff

We enjoyed working with our partner! It was fun finding out new things about them and things we both had in common.

Mrs. Patton Beaver Information:

Mrs. Patton came to our classroom Tuesday and taught us all about beavers. Carolyn even got to dress up like one! It was even neat to feel a beaver's fur. We couldn't believe how soft it was. Mrs. Patton answered all of our questions and was surprised that the kids knew so much about a beaver already.

Literacy Night

Thank you to all the parents who came out for our family literacy night!
